Solution Delivered

The Problem

The client is a medium-sized potato processor. During cold weather months, the steam supply from the primary boiler would fall below what was required to sufficiently operate the process. The client requested an evaluation of the existing steam boiler and distribution system to determine an approach to increase capacity.

An AVID Evaluation

  • Boiler was properly sized.
  • Pumps and flash tanks were properly sized.
  • Main distribution pipe was substantially oversized.
  • Pipe distribution was creating condensation formation within the pipe.
  • Several take-off piping to end users was oversized.
  • Improperly designed distribution piping reduced boiler capacity by over 20%.

Recommendations
& Implementation

  • Replace oversized piping with properly sized piping where feasible.
  • Add drip legs where required to remove condensate within the piping.
  • Modify piping to have sufficient sloping to remove condensate.
  • Rework of expansion loops.
Following review of the evaluation recommendations, the client requested that installation drawings and specifications be prepared for implementation of the recommendations.

Custom
Solution

The client initially thought that the boiler may have been undersized. By evaluating the entire boiler system, we were able to isolate the cause of the boiler undercapacity as a piping issue. This allowed for a relatively speedy and cost-effective alteration that allowed the client to return to full capacity.

The client implemented the recommendations presented and was able to realize the increased capacity from the boiler.
